COLUMBUS -- A bill sponsored by State Rep. Dan Dodd, D-Hebron, might limit the uses of transition accounts by elected officials.
Transition accounts typically are opened the day after an election and can remain open for 120 days to help officials shift from campaigning to office.
According to a press release, legitimate expenses include setting up an office, staff salaries and inaugural events.
But Dodd said when former Attorney General Marc Dann was impeached, investigations revealed the accounts were used by Dann for items most people would consider abuse, but no laws governed the accounts at the time.
The new bill not only limits the uses but also sets limits on the amount that contributors can donate and requires periodic reporting to the Secretary of State's office.
The bill passed 95-0. It now will be considered by the Senate.
